Study Claim: 300mg/day of MegaNatural Gold grape seed extract may increase blood antioxidant capacity at levels greater than vitamins C, E or beta-carotene.

Published: Vinson J, et al. MegaNatural Gold grape seed extract: in vitro antioxidant and in vivo human supplementation studies. J Med Food 2001;4(1):17-26.

Abstract: Among the nine subjects who took 600mg of MegaNatural Gold, the plasma antioxidant activity increased 12 per cent after one- and two-hour tests. This dose is the equivalent of drinking 300mL of red wine or consuming 1,250mg of vitamin C. In this study, researchers used an in vitro model of heart disease, a dose-response inhibition of low-density lipoprotein oxidation.

In a three-week test, researchers studied the in vivo antioxidant activity among 17 subjects (nine normal and eight hypercholesterolemic) who took 300mg twice/day of MegaNatural Gold for three weeks. Plasma cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations decreased significantly in the high-cholesterol subjects. Triglycerides were in the normal range after supplementation, and plasma antioxidant capacity improved significantly.

Potential Applications: MegaNatural Gold grape seed extract is water- and alcohol-soluble and is intended to help reduce high blood pressure and excessive blood clotting.

Lyc-O-Mato® Natural Tomato Extract
Study claim: 15mg lycopene supplements (the equivalent of two tomatoes) for three weeks may slow the growth of prostate cancer.

Published: Kucuk O, et al. Phase II randomised clinical trial of lycopene supplementation before radical prostatectomy. Cancer Epidemiol Bioworkers Prev 2001 Aug;10:861-8.

Abstract: Twenty-six men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer were randomly assigned to receive either 15mg lycopene twice/day, or no supplementation, for three weeks before radical prostatectomy. Researchers used the Western blot analysis on benign and malignant parts of the prostate gland. They measured plasma levels of lycopene, insulin-like growth factor-1, IGF binding protein-3 and prostate-specific antigen at baseline and again at three weeks.

Plasma prostate-specific antigen levels decreased by 18 per cent in the intervention group compared with a 14 per cent increase in the control group. The researchers concluded that although the lycopene slowed the growth of prostate cancer in this study, the sample size was too small to draw a definite conclusion.

Potential applications: Lyc-O-Mato, available in softgels, capsules, tablets and a powdered drink, is intended to promote prostate health, help prevent lung cancer and hypertension, and increase male fertility.

Glucotize Alpha-lipoic Acid
Study claim: 600mg/day Glucotize alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) may increase the plasma concentration of LA in healthy individuals and may have a beneficial effect on glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Published: Evans J, et al. Pharmacokinetics, tolerability and frutosamine-lowering effect of a novel, controlled-released formulation of alpha-lipoic acid. Endocr Pract 2002 Jan/Feb;8(1):29-35.

Abstract: In the pharmacokinetic study, researchers gave 12 normal patients 600mg/day of either controlled-release Glucotize or quick-release ALA (QRLA) for six weeks. In the safety and tolerability part of the study, 21 patients with type 2 diabetes took 900mg of Glucotize for six weeks, followed by 1,200mg of the supplement daily for an additional six weeks, followed by 1,200mg of Glucotize for an additional six weeks. Throughout the study, patients took their prestudy antidiabetic medications.

It took Glucotize 1.25 hours to reach maximum plasma concentration, which lasted more than twice as long compared with QRLA. In 15 patients, the mean plasma frutosamine concentration was reduced from 313 to 283umol/L after 12 weeks of treatment with Glucotize.

Potential applications: Glucotize is available in capsules and is intended for use as an antioxidant and for people with insulin resistance and diabetes.
