VANCOUVER, British Columbia, March 28, 2008 – No need to feel guilty anymore when deciding to indulge in a little bit of chocolate, particularly when it’s fair trade, organic, or enhanced with such goodness as essential fatty acids.
“Chocolate isn’t the guilty pleasure it once was,” says Penelope Marrett, President of the Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA). “Today, many consumers know that consuming small amounts of dark chocolate may offer heart-healthy benefits.”
Chocolate has also recently been found to offer emotional health benefits as it is rich in tryptophan, an essential amino acid connected with the production of the mood-modulating neurotransmitter serotonin.
Health benefits aside, consumers are increasingly looking for chocolate that is ethically produced and in a socially responsible manner, says Marrett.
This April natural health retailers will be able to source chocolate that meets all these requirements at Expo West 2008, April 3-6, at the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre. Produced by the CHFA, Expo West is the largest event in Western Canada for the natural health product and organic industries featuring over 450 exhibitors in the trade show (April 5 & 6).
Just some of the chocolate available will be Green & Black’s organic dark chocolate with orange and spices; organic chocolate infused with 13 grams of essential fatty acids in a creamy filling as in Bija® Udo's Choice® Omega Truffles from Flora Manufacturing & Distributing Ltd.; and antioxidant-rich matcha green tea fair trade chocolate from Cocoa Camino by La Siembra Co-operative.
