February 2002 – Heart disease is the number one killer of women and female misconceptions about its prevalence may often be the reason for some of these deaths. Public perception of heart disease has labeled the epidemic as a “male problem,” yet statistics prove that more women die each year from the disease than do men. In a bill called the “Women’s Cardiovascular Diseases Research and Prevention Act” which was presented to Congress in 1997, statistics showed that in recent years, 52% of deaths from cardiovascular disease were female, while only 48% were male. Recent figures from the American Heart Association pinpoint 503,927 female deaths from heart disease annually- that’s a higher death toll than the next 14 causes combined. Over 28 million- or one in five- American women are living with the effects of a cardiovascular disease, including heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke.
Health From the Sun/ Arkopharma recognizes that women’s heart health has typically been second to men’s and acknowledges the problems caused by that fact. This lack of awareness complicates the problem because, as women do not see heart disease as a threat, they are unlikely be screened and catch the disease early. This lag in diagnosis is most likely the reason that heart disease is so much more fatal in women than in men. According to the “Women’s Cardiovascular Diseases Research and Prevention Act, “once a woman develops a cardiovascular disease, she is more likely than a man to have continuing health problems, and she is more likely to die. With this fact in mind, part of Health From the Sun/ Arkopharma’s mission is to promote heart health awareness for women while formulating safe, natural alternatives to pharmaceutical treatments that are perfect for women.
