Webinar: Nanotechnology—The Significance to the Functional Food and Natural Health Products Industry
March 31, 2pm ET
Nanotechnology is both fascinating and full of opportunity, but how does this new technology fit within the parameters of the functional food and natural products industry? That question and many more will be addressed in the webinar hosted by the National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT), an integrated, multi-disciplinary institution involving researchers in physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, informatics, pharmacy and medicine.
Nils Peterson, PhD, director general of the NINT will take webinar participants through the design rules and platform strategies for nanotechnology. NINT, established in 2001, it is operated as a partnership between the National Research Council and the University of Alberta, and is jointly funded by the Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta and the university.
NINT researchers are focused on the revolutionary work being done at the nano-scale, the world of individual atoms or molecules. The main focus of nanotechnology research is the integration of nano-scale devices and materials into complex nanosystems that are connected to the outside world. The long-term objective is to discover 'design rules' for nanotechnology, and develop platforms for building nanosystems and materials that can be constructed and programmed for a particular application.
This webinar is under the support of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and Wellness West a Canadian partnership of Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

Webinar: Selling out the Joint
April 14, 1pm ET
BioCell Technology, LLC, will present new product opportunities beyond chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine in a webinar on April 14 (1pm ET, 10am PT). William J. Judy, PhD, president and CEO of Southeastern Institute for Biomedical Research and college professor will discuss novel uses and the latest research for joint health ingredients. The webinar will be moderated by Todd Runestad, Functional Ingredients' science editor, who will discuss the market value and consumer purchasing within the joint health market.
For many years now, joint health has been a top-selling category within the condition-specific marketplace. In 2007, U.S. consumers spent $1.5 billion on supplements aimed at treating joint health, according to Nutrition Business Journal estimates. That was up 9% from 2006. Total sales climbed above $1.7 billion in 2008 as the market grew another 9%, according to NBJ forecasted estimates.
Even with such stellar sales, there is still room for growth and more than enough elbow room for new product introductions. Joint health is a primary concern for aging boomers as they continue to stay active.
