First Study of its Kind Shows Tonalin® CLA in Skim Milk Significantly Reduces Body Fat

Provides Important Insight into Weight Management Benefits for CLA in Functional Dairy Products

La Grange, Ill., Oct. 15, 2007 – Tonalin® CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) in skim milk significantly reduces body fat mass (BFM) in overweight subjects, indicating that CLA can be beneficial in body weight and fat management when taken as a functional food or supplement, according a study published in the prestigious British Journal of Nutrition1. The researchers noted that subjects lost most of the fat from their trunk (torso) area of the body -- good news for consumers aiming to improve both their health and body shape.

The results showed a significant 3% reduction of BFM in the overweight group taking the milk fortified with Tonalinâ CLA. No significant fat loss was found in the obese volunteers or in either group taking the placebo. The research also found that CLA supplementation was not associated with any adverse effects or clinical changes.

“These findings are especially exciting in light of the weight management platform that has evolved in the dairy industry based on mounting scientific evidence,” said David Cai, PhD, Senior Scientist, Cognis Nutrition & Health. “Dairy products are excellent carriers for CLA, considering taste, color, texture, processing and product development issues. Formulators will find CLA to be a health-enhancing ingredient that can be added to a dairy product without adversely affecting the sensory characteristics of the product,” Dr. Cai explained.

He pointed out that CLA-fortified milk is well-tolerated as shown by the more than 99 percent of adults who completed the study. Sixty overweight (BMI £30) but otherwise healthy men and women, aged 35 – 65 years, were randomized to a daily intake of 500 ml skimmed milk fortified with 3 grams of Tonalinâ CLA, or a placebo milk, over a 12-week period.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention trial, was conducted by a team of Spanish researchers, led by Dr. Amalia Lafuente from the Department of Farmacología y Química Terapéutica, Universidad de Barcelona.

In interpreting their results, the authors discussed other published literature on the effects of CLA on body composition including the landmark Gaullier study, 2,3 in which 12 months’ supplementation with Tonalin® CLA resulted in greater BFM reductions - up to 9%. However, Dr. Lafuente points out: “If the Gaullier study results are extrapolated to those of our shorter study (12 weeks), they coincide with the 3% BFM reduction we observed. Our data indicate that CLA supplementation may be a useful approach to reducing fat mass, which is a prominent cardiovascular risk factor.”

The lack of effect in obese subjects may be due to a relatively short study period. The authors state that a longer study would detect the body fat changes caused by the CLA.

The new findings come on the heels of another new Tonalin® CLA study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition4 which helped explain the actual physiologic mechanism for CLA activity in reducing body fat and impact of Tonalin® CLA in reducing fat storage, the number of fat cells and size of fat cells.
