Is Fish Oil Safe ?

Stringent tests performed on fish oil distributed by Bioriginal Food & Science Corp. assure safety

Saskatoon, SK, Canada – Due to documented health benefits, North American fish consumption is on the rise, but so are concerns about PCBs in fish. A new report released on January 8, 2004, stated that high chemical contaminants were found in farm-raised salmon. As an option to eating large amounts of fish for their health benefits, consumers can take fish oil supplements, which are a safe alternative.

“High quality fish oil supplements are a safe way to receive the benefits of the healthy omega-3 fatty acids while avoiding unwanted contaminants,” advises Karlene Karst, RD, Nutrition and Education Specialist.

Ensuring the purity of its oils and consumer safety are main concerns at Bioriginal Food & Science Corp., the world’s largest essential fatty acid supplier and a key North American distributor of high-quality marine-based products. Bioriginal’s fish oil partner, located in Norway, adheres to the highest manufacturing standards, which include processing all fish oils to remove potentially harmful environmental contaminants such as PCBs, dioxins and heavy metals. The Norwegian company tests for these contaminants and complies with the Council for Responsible Nutrition’s voluntary omega-3 monograph which has established stringent quality standards for marine-based omega-3 ingredients; stricter than those levels set by Health Canada and the FDA. Bioriginal provides certificates of analysis with every shipment of oil, which show the results of these tests.

“Our customers can be assured that they are receiving the safest, cleanest products to pass on to retailers and end consumers. We recommend that retailers ask their suppliers for proof of testing to ensure they can respond with confidence to consumer questions about the safety of their fish oil products,” commented Barry Skorobohach, Quality Assurance/Quality Control Manager for Bioriginal.
