Flax Lignan Mechanisms & Market Opportunities Presented at Supply Side West

Minneapolis - At this year’s Supply Side West, Acatris will present their new ingredient LinumLifeTM. LinumLife is derived from flax and contains the highest standardized level of lignans. Lignans are receiving increased attention for their health-enhancing properties in relation to, among others, bone health, heart health, menopausal symptoms, acne, prostate health and hair loss. Supply Side West takes place from October 1-3 2003 in Las Vegas.

“Lignans are gaining interest as more and more studies report that they have protective effects in both men and women.” says Dr. Marian Verbruggen, R&D Director of Acatris. “An especially interesting field is men’s health. The occurrence of prostate problems among men increases with age. With LinumLife men can take preventative measures. Lignans are scientifically related to not only decreasing the symptoms, but also reducing prostate size in the case of an enlarged prostate.” It is generally accepted that prostate enlargement is related to the male hormone testosterone. Lignans have been reported to influence the metabolism of testosterone thus positively affecting prostate health.

Hair loss is another condition related to testosterone and its metabolites.
“The most common form of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia (AGA). It is a hormone dependent process that continuously miniaturizes the sensitive hair follicles,” explains Dr Verbruggen. “Similar to the mechanism of reducing BPH, lignans also influence the metabolic process involved in AGA, thus preventing the hair from thinning and eventually falling out. LinumLife is a completely natural product that can play an important role for this condition.”

Lignans are phytoestrogens and can therefore influence estrogen balance. “So women can also benefit from LinumLife, says Dr. Verbruggen. In addition to being phytoestrogens, lignans have antioxidant properties. This combination may contribute to the relief of menopausal symptoms, improve bone health and support healthy cholesterol levels.”

Dr. Verbruggen will explain the science and mechanisms of action behind lignans during the Supply Side West Vendorworks. The lecture starts at 12pm on Friday October 3. Acatris is also exhibiting at Supply Side, booth 1217-1219.
