Fortitech Asia Pacific has achieved ISO 9001:2000 & HACCP recertification. The process was undertaken by National Quality Assurance USA and HACCP certification process by the Malaysia Ministry of Health. Fortitech Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd is part of the global network of manufacturing and distribution companies of Fortitech Inc. Located in Kuala Lumpur, the company is exclusively dedicated to the manufacture of nutrient premixes.

Sue Horne, PHRNew HR manager at Main Street
Main Street Ingredients has hired Sue Horne, PHR, as its new human resources manager. The Wisconsin-based company provides food ingredients to the dairy, nutritional and food processing industries. Applications include ice cream and frozen desserts, cheese products, bakery products, nutritional beverages and confections.

New sales director at Embria
Embria Health Sciences has appointed Greg Thornton as the company?s director of sales. With more than three decades of industry sales experience, Thornton was most recently the North American sales manager for Kemin Health, LC, where he annually ranked as one of the company?s top sales professionals.

Facility opens in Suzhou, China
BI Nutraceuticals has opened a 75,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Suzhou, China. The facility provides BI with additional manufacturing capacity, as well as a full-service quality assurance lab to test all extracts and ingredients purchased in the region. Facility staff will conduct vendor audits to support the company?s Vendor Qualification Program.

NDI notification for Oligonol
The FDA has accepted a New Dietary Ingredient notification for Oligonol. The FDA accepted the notification without comment, concluding that Oligonol is safe and can be marketed in the US. Oligonol is an antioxidant ingredient developed by Amino Up Chemical Co of Sapporo, Japan, which consists of oligomerized polyphenols that may help promote healthy ageing. Maypro is the US distribution partner of Amino Up.

BioLife to sell BioGaia sachet
BioGaia has reached an agreement with BioLife New Zealand Ltd which gives BioLife the rights to sell BioGaia's newly developed sachet, potion packs, containing colostrum and Reuteri, in China. The product contains colostrum powder and BioGaia's probiotic Reuteri culture.

DSM purchases Pentapharm
Pentapharm Holding Ltd and DSM Nutritional Products have signed an agreement on the sale and purchase of 100 per cent of the Pentapharm's shares to DSM. Pentapharm, headquartered in Basel (Switzerland) with sales revenues of some EUR 40 million, employs about 200 people at locations in Switzerland, Japan and Brazil.

Puroast CoffeeLow-acid coffee wins taste tests
Puroast Coffee Co, a clinically proven low-acid coffee, has been named in two separate taste trials as the most robust and flavorful of all brands tested, including regular and low-acid coffees. Participants in tests conducted by Newsweek magazine's Lifestyle group and The Wall Street Journal's Personal Journal staff, rated Puroast the highest for flavour — a first for a stomach-friendly coffee brand. Millions of coffee-lovers suffer from stomach and gastrointestinal discomfort caused by the naturally occurring acidity in coffee. Puroast Low Acid Coffee is available in 20 varieties.

Bob's Red Mill expansion
Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods has moved its manufacturing, packaging, warehouse and office space to a 320,000-square-foot building. Located a half mile east of the existing Oregon facility, the facility triples the company's manufacturing capacity. The new facility — which includes 17 acres of land, with seven acres under roof — allows for expansion of the company's manufacturing, packaging and distribution capabilities for the more than 400 Bob's Red Mill products. The company will also be able to create gluten-free products at four times its current rate.

Gadot purchases 85 per cent of Pharmline
Food-ingredients producer Gadot Biochemical Industries has acquired 85 per cent of Pharmline Holding of Florida shares. Pharmline is a private company engaged in processing and marketing of ingredients and premixes to the North American nutraceuticals market. Headquarters and the production site are in Florida, New York. Pharmline's revenue in 2006 was approximately $37 million. Pharmline is a strategic arm for Gadot, allowing the company to broaden its portfolio and services to the food industry, and more specifically to the functional-foods industry.

New sales exec for Embria
Greg Thornton has been appointed director of sales for Embria Health Sciences, raw-materials manufacturer of science-backed natural ingredients for human nutrition. Thornton has more than 30 years' industry sales experience, most recently as North American sales manager for Kemin Health. Embria was the 2005 winner of Nutrition Business Journal's Product Merit Award for its selenium ingredient, eXselen.

Organic farm purchase in India
Florida-based Organix-South, a manufacturer of herbal body-care products and herbal supplements under the brand names TheraNeem and TheraVeda, has partnered with Nisarga Biotech, an India-based company that produces organic supercritical extracts. Together, the two companies purchased the Umbari Organic Farm, located a few hours east of Bombay, which received the prestigious EcoCert certification last winter. No toxic chemicals, GMOs, fertilizers, pesticides or fungicides are used on the land. Some of the plants being grown include turmeric, ginger, bacopa and holy basil. The farm, which sustains more than 40 families, is part of a larger farming community in India, surrounded by other organic, fair-trade farms.

Sabinsa hires sales manager
Sabinsa Corp has hired Chris Brown as its Western regional sales manager. Brown's territory includes Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah and Idaho. Most recently, Brown worked in sports administration, marketing and promotions at Utah Valley State College. He also served for 15 years as a health educator and coach at Payson High School. He holds a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University and a master's degree in education and administration from Grand Canyon/Southern Utah University.

Monheit receives recognition
Len Monheit, editor of New Hope Natural Media's NPIcenter was awarded the Natural Products Association's Industry Champion Award at the Natural MarketPlace 2007 industry trade show and convention in Las Vegas. CardiaBeat earns EC approval
Enzymotec's CardiaBeat received Novel Food approval by the European Commission, which enables immediate sales and distribution in the EU to both functional-foods and dietary-supplements markets. CardiaBeat is a sterol-based matrix that can reduce additional cardiovascular risk factors beyond cholesterol. So far it has been sold as a dietary supplement in the US, Israel and Southeast Asia. Earlier this year, CardiaBeat won the NutrAward prize at SupplyExpo 2007. Enzymotec develops and produces lipid-based ingredients, such as SharpPS, SharpPS SILVER and SharpPS GOLD for improving cognitive performance, and InFat for balanced nutrition for babies and toddlers.
