GLA: A Functional Ingredient
Expert to support Gamma Linolenic Acid at American Oil Chemists Conference
Saskatoon, SK, Canada – Dr. Rakesh Kapoor will discuss the characteristics of GLA as a functional ingredient at the upcoming AOCS Conference on Specialty Oils, May 8, 2004, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Recognized as an expert on the use of essential fatty acids (EFAs) in formulations for supplementation, Dr. Kapoor is familiar with the latest studies on GLA, an omega-6 fatty acid.
GLA is found primarily in borage, evening primrose, and black currant oils, and has many health benefits. Dr. Kapoor will discuss various applications of GLA oils and the current research surrounding GLA and inflammation, cardiovascular health, diabetes, atopic dermatitis, and cancers. “The media has recently focused much attention on the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, while omega-6s like GLA are often overlooked. GLA has also consistently shown positive results for many health conditions,” commented Dr. Kapoor.
In addition to his 20 years of experience in essential fatty acid formulation and research, Dr. Kapoor’s areas of expertise include free-radical research and herb standardization. He is currently the Director of Science and Technology at Bioriginal Food & Science Corp., where he is responsible for new product and formulation developments, clinical trials, technology evaluation and dissemination of current scientific developments to staff and customers.
Dr. Kapoor will also speak on Natural Emulsifiers for Food and Dietary Supplements on May 10 during the AOCS Annual Meeting. He has been asked to chair the poster session judging for the health and nutrition division during the Conference as well.
The AOCS Conference on Specialty Oils runs from May 7-9, 2004 and will focus on the effects of specialty oils on health, nutrition and disease, as well as their processing and utilization.
