The season for fresh grapes from California is about to peak in markets, according to Pandol Bros., Inc. a grower and marketer of grapes and fresh produce for more than 70 years. Consumer research reveals grapes are the third most popular fruit purchase, trailing only bananas and apples. Health experts say this ranking may increase as we learn more about the powerful antioxidant, resveratrol, found naturally in the skin of each and every grape.
While grapes are known to contain at least 500 different phytonutrient antioxidants, they contain a uniquely high concentration of resveratrol.
“Emerging research shows this potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent has the potential to positively impact our health,” says Dr. Stephen Pandol, grandson of the company’s founders and professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
In the 1990’s resveratrol attracted broad attention in the context of the French paradox. This is the phenomena in which the French, despite a diet high in fat, suffer from less heart disease when compared to other populations. They also drink much more red wine than other populations. “Subsequent research identified resveratrol present in grape skins as playing a crucial role in protecting the heart,” adds Dr. Pandol.
Dr. Pandol continues, “Fortunately, eating a few tasty grapes provides much of the same benefit from resveratrol as found in red wine.”
Overall, grapes pack such a punch of antioxidants they are second only to pomegranates and ahead of blueberries. Research has not been limited to red grapes. Many studies used a blend of regular green, red and black table grapes.
Results of recent studies suggest potential anti-cancer, anti-aging, anti-viral and other protective effects of resveratrol. These results are instigating a more rigorous evaluation of resveratrol’s healing potential.
Ancient civilizations were on to the nutritional qualities of grapes. Even Hippocrates, known as the father of medicine, included red wine in nearly every remedy and used it as an antiseptic. Only now do we have the scientific research underway to understand and document the beneficial effects of grapes.
