SAN DIEGO-- (AP) Internal Revenue Service agents raided the headquarters of an herbal weight-loss product company, removing documents as part of an income tax evasion investigation, authorities said.

About 40 IRS investigators spent most of Wednesday at Metabolife International Inc. Company workers were sent home when they arrived at work.

The privately held company said in a statement that it was cooperating with the tax investigation, which did not involve any of its products.

Metabolife was founded in 1995 and has annual sales of nearly $1 billion. Its products include Metabolife 356, which contains herbal ephedrine, a stimulant used by consumers hoping to lose weight or boost athletic performance.
