Hope Found at Natural Products Expo West— Noted U of Florida Professor Helps Beat Depression with Seminar about Posinol(TM)

LOS ANGELES, CA, February 6, 2006–OptiPure® and Soft Gel Technologies, Inc.® (SGTI®) will host Veronika Butterweck, Ph.D., as a speaker at the Natural Products Expo West trade show in Anaheim, California, to be held March 23-26, 2006. Dr. Butterweck is currently an assistant professor in the Pharmaceutics Department at the University of Florida, where she specializes in natural products research, particularly herbal antidepressants. Her presentation entitled, “Depression, Anxiety, and New Herbal Research,” will be held on Friday, March 24th at 12:30 p.m. in room 207D of the Anaheim Convention Center.

The primary focal point of the lecture will encompass learning about herbal antidepressants, and will highlight one unique, patented botanical sold under the brand name, Posinol™. It promotes a positive mental outlook by supporting a healthy balance of neurotransmitters. The most common botanicals studied for mood disorders, including St. John’s wort and kava, have been overshadowed by drug interactions and negative effects on the body. Safety concerns regarding these natural compounds prompted the exploration of other herbs. Posinol™ is one herbal alternative that has a strong safety record and has recently been tested for toxicity. Posinol™ is an extract from the leaves of Apocynum venetum, a traditional Chinese herb with a long history of use—over 600 years—that was originally used for treating hypertension. It has been the subject of numerous animal trials which demonstrate its safety and efficacy, and is currently being tested in a human trial. OptiPure® is the exclusive supplier of this botanical material.

Dr. Butterweck earned her doctorate from the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology and Institute of Pharmaceutical Biology and Phytochemistry at Westfaelische Wilhelms-Universität in Muenster, Germany, where her field of study was the antidepressant activity of St. John’s wort. She has also done postdoctoral fellowships with the National Institutes of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Her current research interests at the University of Florida in Gainesville include the study of herbal medicines with central nervous system activity; specifically the investigation of plants with antidepressant or anxiolytic activity, phytomedicines for the treatment of restlessness and sleep disturbances, and herbal remedies for the prevention of alcohol dependency.

Ron Udell, Executive Vice President of OptiPure® commented, “With depression and anxiety disorders becoming increasingly common, it is important to have efficacious natural products available that play a role in regulating mood. We are pleased to have Veronika Butterweck speak on our behalf at Expo West. She will be able to communicate the wonderful benefits of Posinol™ to manufacturers, retailers, and consumers who attend her seminar.”
