BOULDER, Colo., May 5, 2004 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Horizon Organic, underscoring the rising popularity of organic cheese, has expanded its cheese product line by nearly 50 percent with the introduction of seven new varieties. Two of them -- Swiss and Provolone cheese slices are new to the organic market and the one-pound offering is also the first of its kind in the organic cheese business.
Specifically, Horizon Organic expanded its 15-item cheese line to 22 items by introducing deli-style slices of Provolone(1) ($4.19), Swiss ($4.69) and Cheddar ($4.19); a one-pound bar of America's favorite cheese flavor -- Cheddar ($7.99); an eight-ounce Sharp Cheddar bar ($4.19); and new Parmesan ($3.69) and Thick-cut Cheddar Shreds ($3.69) in convenient resealable bags.
Horizon Organic expanded its line of cheese products in response to the significant rise in organic cheese consumption in recent years. Horizon Organic achieved 52 percent growth in the organic cheese category in the past quarter, outpacing the overall category. Now, more than ever, cheese-loving families are beginning to value the benefits of organic cheese as a way to help lower their exposure to antibiotics, added growth hormones and dangerous pesticides in food.
"Many consumers are taking a closer look at how their food choices impact their overall health and well being," said Chuck Marcy, president of Horizon Organic. "We're making sure Horizon Organic continues to offer consumers products that are produced without the use of antibiotics, added growth hormones and dangerous pesticides. Our overall aim is to give consumers organic alternatives to all their favorite foods. Expanding our cheese line is one way we're doing that."
Horizon Organic already offered eight-ounce Monterey Jack, Mozzarella, Cheddar, reduced fat Cheddar, and Colby bars; 8 oz American Singles; six-ounce bags of shredded Monterey Jack, Mozzarella, Cheddar, reduced fat Cheddar and Mexican; and Mozzarella sticks and Colby sticks. It also offers eight-ounce tubs of cream cheese and reduced fat cream cheese.
"As the number one organic cheese brand, we believe in giving consumers the flavors, variety and added convenience they want," said Jay Orris, Horizon Organic brand manager. "We see great promise in the organic cheese category and have seen tremendous growth in recent years. We are very excited to bring these new products to market and commit to broadening the organic cheese category."
The new cheese products are available now at Whole Foods and Wild Oats. For more information about Horizon Organic's products, including the seven new cheese products, and the benefits of organic foods, please visit www.horizonorganic.com.
