TallGrass Distributions co-founder, president and CEO Benjamin Banky, 40, was shot and killed during his company Christmas party on Friday December 12th, 2008.
Banky helped found his company 12 years ago with friend Matthew Breech after an encounter with American tourists in China who spoke highly of the hemp market’s future growth potential.
Banky was described as a man “with a strong set of values, a wonderful sense of fairness and the desire to give back” and as someone with “dedication to his family, friends and business.”
The Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA), (Banky was a member of the board of directors), has posted a page to honour him, which can be viewed at this link. Visitors to the page are able to submit their own stories and memories of Banky there.
Charged with first degree murder is Eric Allen Kirkpatrick, 61, of Vancouver. Kirkpatrick was a former employee who had been let go from TallGrass for unknown reasons the day before the shooting. He is set to appear in court for his arraignment hearing on Dec. 29, 2008.
