Industry signposts: Hints of things to come

Surging sales
Sales of vitamins and nutritional supplements, which have grown consistently for years, have surged in recent months, rising as the stock market has fallen, according to the New York Times, which reported that The Vitamin Shoppe has tracked a rise in new customers of about 20 percent over the last six months.

Oversight ahead
The Dietary Supplement Caucus at the US House of Representatives was registered in April, with co-chairs Rep Dan Burton (R-IN), Rep Jared Polis (D-CO), and Rep Jason Chaffetz (R-UT). The first briefing for Congressional staff is planned for Wednesday, June 3rd.

Woops... reported in April that more than 30 per cent of multivitamins it tested contained significantly more or less of an ingredient than claimed, or were contaminated with lead.

Food terror
73 percent of adults say they are as equally concerned about food safety as the war on terror, according to a February Harris Interactive poll conducted for the American Society for Quality.
