Institut Rosell-Lallemand announces the latest addition to its immune support range: ProbioKid® Vita+. Marketed as a natural solution to maintain the body’s natural defenses, ProbioKid® Vita+ is the fruit of Institut Rosell and Lallemand’s expertise in probiotics and high quality yeast-based health ingredients. It combines the synbiotic formula clinically documented to reduce common infections in children (1) and two vitamins recognized for their immune potential: vitamin D, from yeast-based ingredient Lalmin Vita D, and Vitamin C. Both vitamins have been granted immune-related health claims by EFSA. ProbioKid® Vita+ was unveiled at the Vitafoods Europe trade show that took place in early May in Geneva (Switzerland), where it raised much interest. ProbioKid® Vita+ is based on Institut Rosell-Lallemand’s clinically documented formula ProbioKid® and contains an optimal combination of three well-documented probiotic strains (Lactobacillus helveticus Rosell-52, Bifidobacterium bifidum Rosell-71, Bifidobacterium infantis Rosell-33),and a prebiotic (fructo oligo saccharide- FOS). In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study presented in 2010 at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) congress and conducted in partnership with Laboratoires Urgo (France), this synbiotic formula showed the ability to significantly reduce the incidence of common winter infections (ENT, bronchopulmonary or gastric disorders) in school-aged children by 25%, as compared to placebo. In addition, there was a significant reduction of school absenteeism in children who took the synbiotic, a very good criterion according to the clinicians and an important benefit for parents. This lead the authors of the study to conclude to “a clinically relevant beneficial effect of a 3-month daily synbiotic regimen in preventing usual acute infectious illnesses, without carrying risk, in a school age population of 3-7year-olds.”

ProbioKid® Vita+ also contains vitamin D and C in adequate amounts (15%RDA) to bear immune-related EFSA health claims such as:

Contains/ Source of vitamin D that contributes to the normal function of the immune system and healthy inflammatory response (2).

Contains/ Source of vitamin C that has immunostimulating activities and that reduces tiredness and fatigue (3).

Indeed, certain studies have linked high occurrence of flu during the winter to vitamin D deficiency, and several European surveys have shown that up to 75% of the European population’s vitamin D intake could be below the recommended daily allowances (RDA). Vitamin C is also recognized for its immunostimulating capacities.

Finally, the vitamin D in ProbioKid® Vita+ is Lallemand’s LALMIN® VitaD Yeast, an inactivated dried whole cell yeast containing elevated and standardized levels of non-synthetic vitamin D2, produced by Lallemand thanks to a unique patented process involving the natural conversion by yeast cells of endogenous ergosterol.
