Interest in Glutathione Increasing Based on New Research & Diverse Product Applications

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (March 13, 2005) — Compound Solutions, a leading science-based ingredient supply source for the food, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries, reports that interest in the antioxidant nutrient glutathione is rapidly gaining momentum. The increasing trade activity surrounding glutathione is due to both a rising amount of applications research, and the diversity of health benefits scientifically documented to support human health. “Even with its increasing popularity, Glutathione is germinal in its cycle of trade and consumer level awareness, essentially comparable to where COQ-10 was a couple of years ago,” stated Matthew Titlow, manager of business development at Compound Solutions.

L-Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of three amino acids (L-Cysteine, Glycine, and L-Glutamic Acid). The nutrient’s presence is required to maintain the normal function of the immune system. It also acts as a powerful antioxidant defense against pollutants and is present in the liver in high concentrations. If the liver is overloaded processing herbicides, pesticides or other foreign compounds, natural glutathione concentrations may decrease, impairing its ability to continue detoxifying free radicals. A dietary or functional food supplement of glutathione can make a significant contribution to this important detoxification process.

Product applications utilizing the potent antioxidant include multi-vitamin combinations, pre-natal products, detoxification formulas and macular degeneration prevention supplements.

“Glutathione is probably the single most potent and efficacious antioxidant nutrient scientifically documented to support human health. It’s been overshadowed by other nutrients until recently,” affirmed Titlow. Compound Solutions also notes its Glutathione is manufactured in Japan under strict ISO 9001 criteria.

Compound Solutions is currently assessing the reported synergistic actions between glutathione and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), another antioxidant. Both glutathione and ascorbic acid neutralize (5 & 8 % respectively) DPPH, a potent free radical. When ascorbic acid and glutathione are combined their ability to neutralize DPPH is significantly greater (21% vs. 13%) than the individual benefits of each nutrient.
