Los Angeles, CA, September 13, 2005 — Los Angeles-based Jarrow Formulas® announces that its Max DHA Liquid was given a “Best Choice” rating by the non-profit group Environmental Defense, which showed that Jarrow Formulas® follows strict procedures to eliminate environmental contaminants and to assure the highest purity of its fish oil supplements.
Environmental Defense (ED) released results of its fish oil supplement safety survey on its website at www.oceansalive.com. There are a variety of standards for allowable limits of contaminants in food (including dietary supplements). For this study, Environmental Defense evaluated standards from the following government agencies:
- The State of California (Proposition 65)
- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency
- The European Union.
Surprisingly, allowable levels of contaminants vary greatly between agencies, with the FDA's standards being the least stringent. The standards by EPA and California's Proposition 65 were the strictest and hence were used as the baseline for the survey.
Environmental Defense contacted multiple companies whose fish oil products are commonly found in supermarkets, pharmacies and health food stores and asked them the following:
- Whether they purify their fish oil to reduce or remove environmental contaminants
- What methods they use to purify their fish oil
- What standards they comply with regarding acceptable levels of contaminants (Companies need to submit the actual laboratory analysis report on all the contaminants specified by Prop 65)
Each of the companies surveyed received one of the following ratings:
- Best Choice
- Worst Choice
“Fish is one of the most contaminated food groups worldwide,” says Peilin Guo, Vice President of Functional Foods for Jarrow Formulas. “Fish oil will not deliver its expected health benefits unless it is free from human contaminants, such as heavy metals and pesticides. Jarrow Formulas fish oil is manufactured at a pharmaceutical drug-licensed facility and meets very strict CRN, Prop 65 as well as European Pharmaceutical standards for purity. Highly effective purification processes, such as double molecular distillation, is used to obtain pure omega-3 fatty acids (mainly DHA and EPA) as well as protecting the “freshness” of the product. Additionally, Jarrow Formulas complies with CRN labeling recommendations in disclosing the actual omega-3 fatty acids content in its products.”
