Basel, 3 February, 2004. Swiss chemicals company Lonza announced today that L-Carnitine L-Tartrate is approved in the EU for use in all foodstuffs intended for par-ticular nutritional uses (Parnuts). Commission Directive 2001/15/EC of 15 February 2001, containing a list of substances that may be added for specific nutritional purposes, was recently amended by Commission Directive 2004/5/EC.
All EU member states will need to adapt their national regulations before 31 March 2004 in order to allow L-Carnitine L-Tartrate in Parnuts applications. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that L-Carnitine L-Tartrate in a dosage of up to 3 gram/day is safe to be used. The approval comes just before the deadline of 1 April 2004 set for the prohibition of trade in products which do not comply with EU Directive 2001/15/EC.
L-Carnitine occurs naturally in the human body and is frequently referred to as the “energy nutrient” because of its primary physiological role in the human body, which centres on the generation of energy from fat. L-Carnitine carries long chain fatty acids into the mitochondria where they are oxidised. L-Carnitine L-Tartrate is a sta-ble non-hygroscopic salt of L-Carnitine.
