Lonza announced today that an external expert scientific panel has concluded that the company’s L-CARNIPURE® L-Carnitine Crystalline and L-Carnitine L-Tartrate are now GRAS (General Recognized As Safe) for the general population, when used as a food ingredient at specified levels.
Following this new exciting development, functional food and beverage manufacturers in the U.S. can now utilize L-CARNIPURE® L-Carnitine Crystalline and L-Carnitine L-Tartrate thereby meeting the increased consumer demand for nutritionally beneficial products.
L-Carnitine, a vitamin-like nutrient, occurs naturally in the human body and is essential for turning fat into energy. Due to clinical research, L-Carnitine is already a popular dietary supplement among physically active people who supplement with this nutrient to help with post-exercise recovery. Extensive scientific research indicates that L-Carnitine promotes cardiovascular health and studies also suggest that L-Carnitine may be useful as part of a weight management program.
At the request of Lonza Inc., an expert panel of independent scientists examined a comprehensive package of information compiled by Cantox Health Sciences International, a leading scientific and regulatory consulting firm. The panel reviewed publicly available scientific information, as well as extensive information proprietary to Lonza’s L-CARNIPURE® L-Carnitine products. The Expert Panel concluded that L-CARNIPURE® L-Carnitine Crystalline and L-Carnitine L-Tartrate, meeting food grade specifications and produced by Lonza in compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices, are GRAS for use at defined levels in specific foods as a dietary source of L-Carnitine. Such foods include energy beverages, fruit juices, fruit-flavored drinks, protein bars, meal replacements, health/breakfast bars, imitation and soy milk and carbonated soft drinks.
Dr. Paula Gaynor, Associate Director of Scientific Affairs, Lonza Inc., commented, “We at Lonza recognized that functional food manufacturers in the U.S. are looking for nutraceutical ingredients that have both proven health benefits and are GRAS. Having acquired GRAS status for our L-CARNIPURE® products, we can now provide functional food manufacturers with a new and novel way to meet consumer demands for foods that benefit their health and increase their well-being. Obtaining GRAS status is further evidence of Lonza’s ongoing commitment to improving L-Carnitine’s scientific and regulatory status.”
