Magtein cognitive-support ingredient self-affirmed as GRAS

AIDP, Inc. has announced that Magtein, a unique, new functional ingredient designed to help support cognitive health, has attained self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status.

AIDP, Inc. has announced that Magtein™ (Magnesium l-Threonate), a unique, new functional ingredient designed to help support cognitive health, has attained self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status. Currently there are approximately 5.2 million Americans living with memory deficiency. With that number expected to increase to as many as 16 million by 2050, demand for safe, functional products like Magtein™ that address cognitive health issues is expected to skyrocket over the next two decades.

“The link between magnesium and improved cognitive function has been established for some time” says Kathy Lund, director of business development and marketing for AIDP, Inc. (, exclusive distributor of Magtein™. “Discovered by a group of scientist from MIT, including a Nobel Prize Laureate, Magtein™ is the only form of magnesium proven to significantly increase brain magnesium levels. Animal research showed Magtein improved short-term and long term memory as well as spatial recognition. We are excited Magtein™ has secured self-affirmation GRAS status. Our customers can feel confident about including Magtein™ in their products.”

In order to self-affirm Magtein™ as GRAS, AIDP and Magceutics performed the necessary research to establish and defend Magtein™ as a safe product. A panel of experts was formed to review all safety concerns associated with the product. The panel included Dr. Judith Hauswirth, Dr. John R. Endres, Dr. Amy Clewell, and Matthew Barnes, MS; all of whom conduct research on behalf of AIBMR Life Science, Inc. The AIBMR team affirmed that Magtein™ meets all standard requirements to attain self-affirmed GRAS status, noting that it is safe to use in functional baked goods, beverages, breakfast cereals, milks, milk products and snack foods.

While magnesium is the 4th most abundant mineral in the human body, recent studies show that over two thirds of Americans are magnesium deficient, with some studies placing that number as high as 80%. Magnesium deficiency has been linked to confusion, fatigue, insomnia, irritability, poor memory, and reduced ability to learn, as well as several more serious cognitive and physical health challenges. Magtein™ is able to cross the blood-brain barrier to address low magnesium levels in the brain, working quickly to improve cognitive function.

Magtein™ is a patented and trademarked macro mineral, developed by Magceutics, Inc., designed to be the next key compound for improved cognitive health. Certain health conditions and age can reduce brain synapses which prevent messages from transmitting properly, causing memory loss and reduced cognitive function. The animal study indicates Magtein™ may help prevent cognitive decline by supporting healthy magnesium levels in the brain.*

The potential for Magtein™ is found in the enhancement of memory, attention, visual/spatial recognition and executive decision making. The animal study indicates this not only has the potential to benefit individuals with memory loss, but also those who have trouble concentrating, limited attention spans, and natural memory loss due to oxidation and aging.*

“We see significant possibilities for Magtein™,” adds Lund. “It is a truly one-of-a-kind product that addresses brain health like nothing else on the market. Given that it is fully water soluble, colorless and flavorless; we expect to see Magtein™ in a wide variety of dietary supplements, functional foods and beverage applications.”
