BALTIMORE -- More than 2,800 executives from dietary supplement, food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies met at SupplySide East at the Baltimore Convention Center May 4 to 6. Participants enjoyed three days of business opportunities through the exhibit hall, networking events and education programs.
New events afforded attendees additional means to learn about science and research. The Science at SupplySide Poster Presentations, displayed over the three-day event, gave participants an opportunity to review science and research at their leisure and meet with poster presenters at the Science at SupplySide Poster Presentations/International Welcome Reception on Wednesday, May 4. More than 200 professionals attended the event which was sponsored by OptiPure/Soft Gel Technologies, SourceOne Global Partners and KGK Synergize. VendorWorks in the Exhibit Hall also expanded educational opportunities for attendees and created a convenient venue to learn about company- and product-specific business opportunities.
The SupplySide East Golf Classic, co-sponsored by Lesaffre Yeast Corp., Marco Hi-Tech and HSR: Health Supplement Retailer magazine, kicked off SupplySide East on Wednesday May 4 with nearly 100 golfers at the Beechtree Golf Club. The winning foursome consisted of Steven Cherewich, Usana Health Sciences; Erika Harris and James O'Donnell, Novel Ingredient Services; and Jerry Rayman, Manhattan Drug Co.They won the scramble with a score of 62.
The education program, co-sponsored by EPAX and Nutrilearn, featured three days of comprehensive seminars covering science, marketing, regulations, market trends and more. On Wednesday, attendees heard speakers from the National Institutes of Health, Natural Marketing Institute, American Botanical Council, NSF International, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, UCLA Center for Human Nutrition and the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
Wednesday's program ended with a Featured Presentation 'AOAC International Methods Validation and GMP Compliance'.
Thursday and Friday presentations were given by speakers from Natural Alternatives International, University of Illinois at Chicago, Sloan Trends & Solutions, AIBMR Life Sciences, National Community Pharmacists Association, Vitamin Shoppe, UK Health Food Manufacturers Association, American Herbal Products Association, Council for Responsible Nutrition, National Nutritional Foods Association and Albion Advanced Nutrition. Thursday's entertaining keynote address by The Apprentice winner Bill Rancic was co-sponsored by Celadrin and Natural Products Industry INSIDER magazine. Rancic shared a humorous perspective on business and driving one's own success.
The Opening Reception, co-sponsored by DSM and Natural Health Science, attracted more than 800 guests to enjoy live music, food and cocktails, and networking after the first day of exhibits. "This is always a fantastic event," said Lynda Doyle with DSM. "We enjoyed the opportunity to meet so many of the executives in a relaxed environment." Held on the show floor the second day of exhibits, the Appreciation Lunch was co-sponsored by DNP, NSF International and Natural Products Industry INSIDER magazine.
SupplySide East wrapped up with a well attended FDA-Industry Panel that focused on the implementation of the New Dietary Ingredient provisions of the Dietary Supplement Health and Educatioin Act (DSHEA).
After two years at the Baltimore Convention Center, Virgo announced SupplySide East will return to the Meadowlands Exposition Center May 1-3, 2006. The exhibit hall sold out the last four years at the Meadowlands Exposition Center and had a waiting list for booths prior to the move to Baltimore in 2004.
"After listening to exhibitor and attendee feedback, Virgo is taking the show back to the tri-state area," said Peggy Jackson, director of publishing for Virgo's Health & Nutrition Division. "The industry is heavily concentrated in the area and we are listening to our customers' requests to return."
