GIG HARBOR, WA—August 4, 2005— Metagenics, Inc. today announced the completion of MetaProteomics, a nutrigenomics research center, on its functional medicine campus in Gig Harbor, WA. The first laboratory of its kind in the state of Washington and only the fourth in the U.S., MetaProteomics is expected to aid in the development of nutraceuticals derived from nutrigenomic research strategy. A ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour will be held August 10, 2005 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. State and local dignitaries scheduled to attend include Washington’s governor Christine Gregoire.
Nutrigenomics is the science of discovering highly active substances from food and other natural sources can serve as potent dietary signaling molecules to positively affect genetic expression. Nutrigenomics is not new to Metagenics. The original MetaProteomics lab was established almost 3 years ago in Ithaca, New Jersey, with a second smaller lab in the existing Gig Harbor facilities. Product development using nutrigenomics technology has already yielded the company’s Kaprex® formula.
This new MetaProteomics center houses a cell culture lab, a plant and food chemistry lab, a radiochemical analysis lab, an analytical instrument lab, and a molecular biology lab. The goal of these labs is to develop unique food ingredient extracts that are chemically characterized, isolate individual bioactive molecules from these extracts, and then test them for their ability to modify cellular function related to various disease processes.
The activities of the MetaProteomics research center will be overseen by Dr. Jeffrey S. Bland, President and Chief Science Officer of Metagenics, Inc. The company currently occupies five building sites on its Gig Harbor campus that also house a scientific information center, product research and development teams, a product manufacturing plant, and an on-site human research facility—the Functional Medicine Research Center, where proprietary nutritional formulas are tested in a clinical setting.
Metagenics, a privately held company, was founded in 1983 with the mission to help patients achieve their genetic potential through targeted nutrition. It is headquartered in San Clemente, CA, with manufacturing and multiple research facilities located in Gig Harbor, WA. With over 600 employees worldwide, including a team of over 30 scientific specialists and clinicians, Metagenics is committed to innovative product development, research, and continuing practitioner education. The company holds multiple proprietary formula patents and produces over 400 research-based products to optimize health.
