Micro-Encapsulation of Essential Oils Introduced by Blue California

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA –Blue California, an ingredient manufacturer in Southern California, announced its introduction of micro-encapsulated essential oils in powder form for water soluble applications. This unique and revolutionary process makes oil-soluble ingredients, such as mango and rosemary oils, soluble in water with greater stability and significantly improved bioavailability. Blue California’s proprietary micro-encapsulation technology lends itself perfectly to industry’s demands for innovative ingredient applications and ideal solutions for complex formulations.

Blue California’s micro-encapsulation method produces water-soluble ingredients that differ significantly from other water-soluble forms because it does not use emulsifiers that can cause cloudiness once the product is in solution. Micro-encapsulation can be used with one or several ingredients while maintaining each ingredient’s stability, allowing for different time releases and enhancing bioavailability. It can be widely used as natural flavors, natural preservatives and natural antioxidants in food, bakery, shampoo, functional foods, beverage and the nutritional industries. These microencapsulated essential oils are more stable and completely soluble in cold water.

Cecilia McCollum, Blue California’s Executive Vice President states, “Our technological breakthrough allows us to encapsulate these essential oils and maintain the flavor in liquids. This offers an incredible opportunity for beverages, offering virtually a flavor "explosion" with every drink, as well as offering the known health benefits of natural antioxidants to a variety of commercial products in different industries.” Additionally, no emulsifiers are used in Blue California’s manufacturing process ensuring that the product will stay in solution. Emulsions are unstable and have to be shaken, stirred, or homogenized to form. Eventually, many emulsions revert to the stable state of oil separated from water.

Essential oils are highly concentrated substances extracted from plants and used for a variety of purposes. For instance, rosemary oil is used in hair care, fragrance, cooking and cosmetics. Mango oil adds flavor to beverages, shampoos and more. Recently essential oils have been found to slow down the oxidative deterioration of food. This research, to be published in the January 2007 issue of LWT - Food Science and Technology (Vol. 40, pp. 58-65) suggests that essential oils from common kitchen herbs rosemary and sage could impart flavor and provide a natural alternative to processed meats.
