CHATSWORTH, Calif., Nov 4, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Natrol, Inc. (NTOL), a manufacturer and distributor of nationally branded dietary supplements, today announced that it supported yesterday's decision by the Food and Drug Administration to further implement the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA).
"We welcome and applaud the FDA's initiative to more fully implement this important legislation," says Elliott Balbert, President and CEO of Natrol, Inc. "For the past 10 years, DSHEA has allowed millions of health-conscious consumers to enjoy the benefits of a wide variety of dietary supplements that help them achieve and maintain optimal health and well being," continues Balbert.
On November 4, the FDA announced their intention to focus on three new initiatives regarding the implementation of DSHEA. First, product safety will be more fully realized with a focus on a more comprehensive process to evaluate safety concerns about dietary ingredients and dietary supplements. Second, product quality will be addressed as the FDA continues to review and evaluate more than 1,600 pages of comments in anticipation of publication of a final rule outlining new Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for the industry as well as addressing the type of evidence required for new dietary supplement ingredients. Finally, the FDA is soliciting comments from industry regarding the type and extent of research needed to more fully support product claims related to well-being.
"Natrol, along with a handful of industry companies, has stressed quality and safety above commercialization," said Balbert. "I'm hopeful that the FDA's new strategies will be the catalyst for all companies in the industry to produce safe, effective and accurately labeled products that deserve the trust of consumers that many of us have worked tirelessly to earn."
