Organic Products Expo - BioFach America to be Launched
at Natural Products Expo East 2003
December 18, 2002 (Boulder, CO) - The world's leading trade show producers for the organic products industry have partnered to produce Organic Products Expo - BioFach America. The event will launch at the 19th annual Natural Products Expo East, September 4-7 at the new Washington, DC Convention Center. The partnership, which combines more than 36 years of experience in pioneering and promoting organic trade, was announced today by principals of the two leading trade show producers: Fredrik M. Linder, president of New Hope Natural Media, a division of Penton Media, Inc., and Herta Krausmann, managing director of Nürnberg Global Fairs/BioFach America.
BioFach produces the world's leading international organic exhibition, held each year in Nuremberg, Germany. In addition, BioFach Japan and the BioFach Conference in Rio de Janeiro have been established under the BioFach umbrella. New Hope Natural Media, which produces North America's largest natural and organic products trade show, Natural Products Expo West, also produces Natural Products Expo East, Natural Products Expo Europe and Natural Products Expo Asia. New Hope also publishes the leading trade publications covering the organic market in North America: The Natural Foods Merchandiser, Natural Grocery Buyer and Nutrition Business Journal.
"With recent implementation of the USDA National Organic Program, trade in organic ingredients and consumer packaged goods is in a high-growth mode," said Mr. Linder. "Organic Products Expo - BioFach America will deliver cutting-edge organic finished products, raw materials, market intelligence and education that trade show and conference attendees won't find anywhere else in North America. The collaboration with an organization of the caliber of BioFach is incredibly exciting. BioFach brings a depth of experience with the global organic community to this partnership," said Mr. Linder.
As reported by Nutrition Business Journal, North American organic food sales have grown an average of almost 20% per year during the past 12 years. Retail sales in the United States reached $8.5 billion in 2002 -- up from $1 billion in 1990 -- and represent just over 1% of all U.S. food sales. Global retail sales of organic food totaled $18.2 billion in 2001, or 0.7% of total global food sales of $2.8 trillion. Organic market growth is forecasted at 12-18% annually from 2002-2010. NBJ's conservative estimates put global organic food sales by the end of the decade at $60 billion, still less than 2% of total food sales. "Sales of organic products continue to increase internationally. Organic food production is stepping up as consumer interest continues to strengthen as a result of growing awareness of health issues and lifestyle changes. Our combined experience will bring the American and International organic world together. The momentum that BioFach Nuremberg has built, with more than 2,000 exhibitors from over 50 countries, will continue in Washington DC at Organic Products Expo - BioFach America. Strict admission criteria will continue to safeguard the high quality standard of the exhibits," said Mrs. Herta Krausmann, Managing Director of Nürnberg Global Fairs.
Both New Hope Natural Media and Nürnberg Global Fairs have strong historical partnerships with organic industry organizations worldwide, including leading trade and research groups, including: IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements), the Organic Trade Association, the Organic Farming Research Foundation and the Ecological Farming Association. "Support of trade associations and research organizations is a critical component for healthy market development," said Scott Silverman, Organic Program Manager for New Hope Natural Media. "This partnership with BioFach brings greater resources to New Hope's organic industry support program, which began in 1979."
