Phoenix, Ariz.—A breakthrough mechanism of action study indicates that SierraSil™, a new, unique mineral supplement, when used alone or in conjunction with Vincaria®, a cat’s claw extract, suppresses cartilage degradation and inflammation.
The findings are published in the current edition of the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association (JANA) and will be presented at two upcoming seminars to be held at SupplySide West on Friday, October 1st at 1:00-1:50 pm, in room 803-804 and at Natural Products Expo East on Thursday, October 14th at 11:00-12:00 noon in room 145A.
In this in vitro study, conducted at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, researchers used human cartilage tissue and cells obtained from patients at the time of knee surgery. Results show that both SierraSil and SierraSil with Vincaria significantly reduced the breakdown of cartilage structural integrity by 68-73% (SierraSil alone) and 58-77% (SierraSil with Vincaria) caused by the pro-inflammatory cytokine Interleukin 1â.
“These results indicate that SierraSil and SierraSil with Vincaria are likely to be effective anti-inflammatory agents in the treatment of joint pain and that these benefits are likely due to suppression of gene expression,” said Mark Miller, Ph.D., Professor of Cardiovascular Sciences and Pediatrics at Albany Medical College (NY).
Miller, a current grant reviewer for research for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), was the lead researcher and reporter for this mechanism of action study. “SierraSil and SierraSil with Vincaria may offer exciting new approaches to limiting the joint destruction and lack of mobility associated with arthritis,” Miller added.
Based on the success of a pilot study, SierraSil and Vincaria are being independently investigated in a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled human clinical trial involving osteoarthritis patients.
SierraSil, a powerful, fast-acting, uniquely balanced blend of 65 naturally occurring macro and trace minerals, is only found in the high Sierra Mountains. SierraSil is a distinct mineral compound shown to support joint mobility and flexibility.
Vincaria is a proprietary extract of the Uncaria tomentosa species of cat’s claw, which has been traditionally used as a medicinal herb in Central and South American indigenous populations.
SierraSil for this study was provided by Sierra Mountain Minerals, Inc., a Vancouver-based nutraceutical company. Vincaria for this study was provided by Rainforest Nutritionals, Inc., a Phoenix-based nutraceutical and clinical research company.
