Findings Indicate a Synergistic Effect of Sea Plant Minerals and scFOS®
GOLDEN, December 13, 2004, Colorado – GTC Nutrition, a business unit of Corn Products International, Inc. (NYSE: CPO), today released the findings of a recent study conducted on CalciLife™ prebiotic mineral formulation, that indicates CalciLife increases absorption and retention of calcium as well as increasing bone mineral density.
The study, conducted by the School of Human Ecology at Louisiana State University, evaluated the effects of CalciLife on mineral absorption and retention, bone mineral content and bone mineral density in an animal population. CalciLife™ prebiotic mineral formulation is a combination of Aquamin F™, a sea plant derived mineral source rich in calcium and magnesium, and NutraFlora® scFOS®, a prebiotic fiber that enhances calcium absorption and retention.
Results of the 12-week study reveal that laboratory rats fed CalciLife as part of a standardized diet during a 10-week phase of the study showed a statistically significantly higher level of calcium absorption and retention as compared to a control group. Furthermore, the animals fed CalciLife had a statistically significant higher level of vertebral bone mineral density as compared to the control group.
Current estimates1 show that typical calcium consumption by an average postmenopausal woman falls below the recommended level of 1200 mg per day. Compounding this problem is the fact that some women typically limit their intake of high calcium foods, such as whole milk and cheese, for weight control considerations. Enriching one’s diet with calcium-fortified foods can address this problem and using CalciLife will provide the added benefit of including a prebiotic fiber, which helps to enhance maximum calcium absorption.
CalciLife™ prebiotic mineral formulation, which can be incorporated into numerous applications from baked goods, bars and beverages, to confectionary, dairy and dietary supplements, is just one product
in GTC Nutrition’s innovative product line. Other products in the portfolio include Aquamin™ natural sea plant derivative, NutraFlora® prebiotic dietary fiber, Natureal™ oat bran concentrate and Xylitol natural polyol.
