Flax Lignan Ingredient May Reduce Prostate Size
Minneapolis - A recent study with LinumLife® EXTRA, a 20-percent flax lignan extract, shows that flax lignans may be beneficial in the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is a non-malignant enlargement of the prostate gland that causes urinary obstruction among middle-aged men. The study’s findings suggest that supplementation with LinumLife EXTRA leads to reduction of the prostate size.
LinumLife EXTRA, a dietary supplement ingredient manufactured by Acatris, is a flax lignan extract containing a standardized level of 20 percent SDG (secoisolariciresinol diglucoside), the main lignan in flax. Based on research, consumers need a minimum of 50 mg a day of SDG to reap its health benefits.
In this study, Wistar rats were divided into four equal groups: a negative control group given a standard nutritionally balanced diet containing no phytoestrogens and three research groups that were given daily injections of testosterone to stimulate prostate growth. One of the three testosterone injection groups was the positive control group receiving a standard balanced diet while the two remaining research groups received either 0.5 percent or 1 percent of LinumLife EXTRA in their diets.
“The study’s findings show that the rats with LinumLife EXTRA in their diet had significantly smaller prostates compared to the rats with induced BPH on a diet without LinumLife EXTRA. Although this is the first animal study, it has been validated for its relevance for humans,” says Laurent Leduc, President of the North American Health Division of Acatris. “Earlier studies using flaxseeds have been conducted showing similar results. We are excited about the study’s promising findings with a 20-percent lignan extract. Further studies in humans will follow in the near future.”
According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, BPH affects as many as 75 percent of men between the ages of 60-69 and more than 83 percent of men over the age of 70 in the United States. Study results showed that LinumLife EXTRA not only stopped prostate growth, but also helped reduced the size of the prostate when compared to the positive control group.
“BPH can lead to many discomforts such as frequent urination, dribbling, hesitant, interrupted or weak urine stream and leaking,” explains Jocelyn Mathern, R.D., Flax Lignan Information Bureau Advisory Board Member. “While other natural products may help reduce the symptoms, LinumLife EXTRA helps to actually diminish the size of the prostate. Based on these exciting findings, we see an interesting market for LinumLife in the prostate health arena.”
