Yesterday, the NFL and NFL Players Association announced a new Official NFL/ NFLPA Supplement Certification Program to be monitored by NSF.
The program is intended to assure NFL players do not unknowingly consume banned substances in sports nutrition products, and at the same time ensure that dietary supplements and functional foods are correctly identified, contain accurate quantities of ingredients and are free from contaminants.
According to the NSF website (http://www.nsf.org/nflpa/index.html) NSF has developed stringent criteria for product certification under the NFL/NFLPA Supplement Certification Program.
The program requires that each product lot undergo analytical testing to determine the absence of banned substances, and requires NSF certification to dietary supplements or functional food criteria.
The NFL/NFLPA Supplement Certification Program also requires NSF to perform a formula evaluation, assurance that GMP's are in place and stipulates formal chain of custody compliance for samples.
