Nutraceutical Reports Quarterly Sales and Income

PARK CITY, Utah, Feb 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Nutraceutical International Corporation (Nasdaq: NUTR) today reported results for the fiscal 2003 first quarter ended December 31, 2002.

Net sales for the fiscal 2003 first quarter were $28.9 million compared to $24.5 million for the same quarter of fiscal 2002. For the first quarter, income before change in accounting principle was $2.6 million compared to $2.5 million for the same quarter of fiscal 2002. First quarter diluted earnings per share before change in accounting principle were $0.23 compared to $0.22 in the same quarter of fiscal 2002.

Bill Gay, chairman and chief executive officer, commented, "The Company's overall quarterly performance was excellent when viewed in light of the continuing softness of our competitive marketplace. Our sales and gross profit gains reflect ongoing improvements in our core domestic and international branded business as well as contributions from our new neighborhood natural food markets, which were acquired in mid-2002. During the balance of this year, we will continue our efforts to leverage our margin increases into enhanced profitability. The issues we face include selling, general and administrative cost pressures and the unknowns associated with our economy. We are addressing the areas we control through our long-term cost-savings strategy, which encompasses our facility consolidation efforts. In addition, we are pleased with the continued strength of our balance sheet and cash flow. During the quarter, the Company further reduced inventories, made investments for the future and repaid $4.0 million in outstanding bank debt."

Nutraceutical is one of the nation's largest manufacturers and marketers of quality branded nutritional supplements sold to health and natural food stores. The Company sells its branded products under the brand names Solaray(R), KAL(R), NaturalMax(R), VegLife(R), Premier One(R), Sunny Green(TM), Natural Sport(R), ActiPet(R), Action Labs(R) and Thompson(R) to health and natural food stores in the United States, and to distributors and stores worldwide.
