Nutracon tackles seven emerging market trends

The development of innovative new products that are high quality, healthy and tasty is more challenging than ever. Product development teams must create new concepts that address important current consumer lifestyle trends and be backed by the right mix of scientific substantiation and marketing savvy.

New at Nutracon 2005 will be an ideation, innovation and formulations workshop on ?finding the next Red Bull? on Wednesday, March 16, where you will have the chance to join a unique brainstorming session with Scott Slade, formerly of Red Bull and now with Body Blocks, as well as Jim Tonkin of BioEssentials and Barbara Brueckner of Mattson and Co. You will evaluate new product concepts, and learn strategies to increase the success of new product launches.

Then, for the remainder of the conference, Wednesday-Friday, March 18, learn about the hottest emerging categories driving growth in the industry in one of seven workshop series.

The categories include: The New Lesser Evil, addressing foods lower in carbs and trans fats; Functional and Fortified Food Bioactives; Functional Confectionery, a $5.56 billion segment; Global Market Overview, with a focus on the EU and Asia; The Future of Organic; Natural Personal Care, tackling issues of potency and efficacy; and New Ingredient Science, on the latest in biomedical research.

Nutracon will take place concurrently with Natural Products Expo West at the Anaheim Convention Center March 17-19. Whereas Supply Expo targets issues important to ingredients purchasers, such as QA/QC, regulations and brand value, Nutracon is targeted at executives making strategic decisions on their companies? new product launches and market categories.

Dean Ornish, MD, founder and director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in California, has been invited to give the keynote address on March 18. For the past 25 years, Dr Ornish has directed clinical research demonstrating, for the first time, that comprehensive lifestyle changes may reverse even severe coronary heart disease. He is the author of five best-selling books, including the New York Times? bestseller, Dr Dean Ornish?s Program for Reversing Heart Disease. He is currently directing the first randomised controlled trial demonstrating that comprehensive lifestyle changes may affect the progression of prostate cancer.

Andrew Weil, the author of many articles on complementary medicine, will be this year?s bonus keynote speaker on March 19. A frequent lecturer on talk shows, Dr Weil is an internationally recognized expert on medicinal plants, alternative medicine and the reform of medical education. He publishes a monthly newsletter and maintains a popular Web site at He has also published seven books, most recently Eating Well for Optimum Health: The Essential Guide to Food, Diet and Nutrition.
