Nutrition Business Journal Presents 2nd Annual Lifetime Achievement Awards at NBJ Summit

At the seventh annual NBJ Newport Summit in Coronado, California July 21-23, 2004, Nutrition Business Journal Editor-in-Chief and Summit Co-Chairman Grant Ferrier presented Lifetime Leadership Awards recognizing the following four individuals:

· Ian Newton, Managing Director, Ceres Consulting

· Randy J. Dennin, Vice President (Ret.) of Global Business Development, Capsugel and Chairman, International Alliance of Dietary/Food Supplement Associations (IADSA).

· Annette Dickinson, Ph.D., President, Council for Responsible Nutrition

· Elwood Richard, President, NOW Foods

NBJ’s Lifetime Leadership Awards recognize executives for going beyond the call of duty in their efforts on behalf of the nutrition industry. Recipients are nominated by their peers and selected by a panel of industry leaders chaired by NBJ. A summary of each recipient is included below:


Ian Newton, Managing Director, Ceres Consulting: Born in New Zealand, Newton graduated from the University of New Zealand with degrees in Botany and Zoology and joined Hoffmann-La Roche Canada in 1979. In 1996 he relocated to Roche Vitamins Inc. USA (now DSM) and was responsible for regulatory affairs and business development. Newton oversaw the development of various nutrients; polyunsaturated fatty acid, vitamins, carotenoids and other new ingredients used in food and supplements. Newton also directed an extensive public information program for vitamins and polyunsaturated fatty acids as a resource for health professionals, academics and the media. Now retired from DSM, Ian manages his own consulting business, Ceres Consulting, based in Markham, Ontario, and is a member of the Council for Responsible Nutrition, American Oil Chemists Society and Institute of Food Technologists.

Randy J. Dennin, Vice President (Ret.) of Global Business Development, Capsugel and Chairman, International Alliance of Dietary/Food Supplement Associations (IADSA): Dennin recently retired from Capsugel, a manufacturer of gelatin and vegetarian capsules for the dietary supplement and pharmaceutical industries. Dennin has worked on regulatory issues around the globe and has been a leader in developing a worldwide market for dietary supplements. Dennin chairs IADSA, an alliance comprised of 42 trade associations from six continents. He is also chairman of NNFA Japan and a member of the Board of Trustees for Bastyr University.

Annette Dickinson, Ph.D., President, Council for Responsible Nutrition: Dr. Dickinson has 30 years experience on behalf of the dietary supplement industry. She earned her Ph.D. in nutritional sciences and her M.S. in food sciences from the University of Maryland. A recognized expert and author, her most recent publication is CRN’s 2002 edition of The Benefits of Nutritional Supplements. She was appointed in 2002 to serve a 3-year term on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Food Advisory Committee and is a frequent witness before the U.S. Congress and at other public forums on the legal and technical aspects of marketing dietary supplements.

Elwood Richard, President, NOW Foods: El Richard has been an active member of the natural products business since 1960 and is a strong advocate of science and quality. Mr. Richard’s co-founded the NNFA standards committee and advocates and sponsors industry organizations such as Citizens for Health, NNFA, ABC, AOAC and AHPA among others. NOW Foods also serves as an example of a company that produces high-quality products, supports independent retailers and upholds high standards of social and environmental issues.
