ANAHEIM, Calif.--In the 1970s, worry over 'The China Syndrome' was concern of a possible meltdown at a nuclear power plant. Now, worry over 'The Metabolic Syndrome' is the real concern for the growing rate of obesity among U.S. population and elsewhere with a simultaneous drop in physical activity. For this reason, "Obesity: A Global Metabolic Timebomb," has been added as the third Hot Topic at the 2002 IFT Annual Meeting and IFT Food Expo® June 18, at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Estimates released last week to the World Health Organization show more than 1 billion people worldwide are obese or overweight. Some researchers believe this Metabolic Syndrome affects approximately one out of every three people between the ages of 40 and 60. And according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity significantly increases the risk of dying from all causes, especially heart attacks. Yet, medical conditions do not begin to address the discrimination and bias that is experienced by obese individuals.
This Hot Topic symposium will bring together leading experts from areas including biomedical science, health evaluation and health services, consumer information and restaurant food service, addressing aspects of this disease and presenting what is known to-date. Discussion will include the psychological, physiological, social, and economic ramifications of obesity to Americans and the food industry.
