Ocean Nutrition Canada boosts fish capacity to stay on top

Omega-3 supplier Ocean Nutrition Canada has made a $19 million investment in increased capacity which, it claims, "secures [its] position as the largest fish oil manufacturer in the world."

The company has expanded its molecular distillation plant in Nova Scotia, Canada, resulting in doubling of capacity to produce its MEG-3-branded concentrate.

Through its joint venture collaboration with Alicorp Corporation in Peru, ONC has also built a second fish oil manufacturing plant, achieving a 200% capacity increase in its MEG-3 30% fish oil.

Growth in demand for omega-3 supplements and foods fortified with omega-3 EPA/DHA has been explosive. Packaged Facts recently forecast that the US omega-3 food market would grow from $2 billion in 2007 to $7 billion in 2011.

"With the exponential growth in consumer demand for omega-3 food and supplement products we knew we had to be ahead of the game," said ONC CEO and President Robert Orr. "With our capacity expansion, we are more than prepared to meet any supply demands for both our fish oil and micro-encapsulated ingredients."

Meanwhile, ONC has launched an advertising campaign on the health section of Oprah.com, the website of TV star Oprah Winfrey. The site attracts over 5 million unique visitors and 75 million page views every month.
