Ocean Nutrition Canada Expands Plant Capacity In Response To Global Demand For Omega-3's

-Nova Scotian company projects increased demand for Omega-3's due to U.S. FDA Qualified Health Claim regarding cardiovascular disease-

April 19, 2004 – Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada-- Ocean Nutrition Canada (ONC) - innovator and supplier of the finest quality marine-based natural ingredients to the global dietary supplements and functional food markets announced today that it has completed the expansion of its Omega-3 fish oil concentrate production facility in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia, Canada. The completion of this $10 million, 35,000 square foot expansion over the last 12 months makes ONC the largest manufacturer in the world of high quality omega-3 fish oil concentrates. Increasing production capacity by over 400%, this new facility utilizes innovative technology which creates a new global standard for efficiency in molecular distillation of the health promoting components of fish oil – EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid).

Robert Orr, President of Ocean Nutrition Canada stated " We are officially open for new business as of today. This significant expansion of our production capacity is in response to market demand for our high quality omega-3 concentrates. It will help fill the gap in global manufacturing capacity resulting from increased consumer demand in the supplement sector and prepare ONC to meet the new demand coming from food manufacturers using omega-3’s (EPA/DHA) as functional food ingredients.

Mr. Orr also noted "the recent FDA-approved qualified health claim reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as a constant flow of new research on health benefits of EPA and DHA, have resulted in a huge increase in media attention and resulting consumer awareness of the value and essentiality of EPA and DHA in human nutrition. The U.S. market has experienced a + 20 % 5 year compound annual growth rate for Omega-3 EPA and DHA concentrates and the trend is expected to continue for years to come.”

The expansion is a credit to the ONC engineering team led by Mr. Dave Matthews, Vice President Operations, a world pioneer and expert in omega-3 oil concentrate production technology. Mr. Matthews notes "our new production facility offers more than just an ability to keep up with global demand. We have set a whole new standard for purity of our oils based on unique and proprietary technologies we have developed here in Nova Scotia Canada. We have been researching improved methods for purification of fish oil concentrates since 1997 and have succeeded in creating a process unique to the industry which gives us the ability to set the standard for safety, purity and quality of omega-3 oil concentrates".

ONC's commitment to quality is proven by a pharmaceutical level cGMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) certification of its manufacturing and packaging facilities. ONC also has Canadian Drug Identification Number (DIN) certification for the omega-3 concentrates and is compliant with the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) monograph for long chain omega-3 fatty acids.
