Health studies worldwide indicate that most people are not getting enough Omega-3 EPA and DHA in their diets, a situation that could have serious consequences to the world’s population. These ingredients are essential at all stages of life for everything from brain and eye development to the possible reduction in such inflammatory diseases as asthma and type 1 diabetes.
On the evening of March 12th during Natural Products Expo West, senior executives from Ocean Nutrition Canada (ONC), the largest manufacturer of Omega-3 EPA/DHA from fish oil, will honor executives from Singapore-based Wilmar International Limited (Wilmar), Asia’s leading agribusiness group, for taking decisive action in response to this alarming situation.
Wilmar will receive ONC’s 2010 Most Significant Contribution to Human Health Award in the Omega-3 Sector. The award will be given during a private ceremony, to which the media is invited. Food and drink will be provided.
Wilmar’s groundbreaking contribution
In China, the EPA/DHA situation is particularly alarming. According to a national survey conducted by the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China, the averaged daily intake of EPA/DHA of Chinese residents is only 37.6 mg/day, less than 25 percent of the levels accepted by the United States Institute of Medicine (IOM), and less than 10 percent of the intake recommended by the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids.
In response, Wilmar has launched an Arawana blended cooking oil enriched with ONC’s MEG-3 fish oil. Arawana 3A+ premium cooking oil is a blended vegetable oil product that contains sufficient Omega-3 to help Chinese consumers meet IOM Omega-3 intake recommendations.
