Analytical lab Alkemists Pharmaceuticals, based in California, has teamed up with Green Mountain Energy Company?to achieve carbon neutrality.
As part of the initiative, Green Mountain measured the emissions impact of Alkemists' usage of electricity, refrigerant and natural gas, as well as employee commuting and corporate air travel. The company was found to be emitting 31 metric tonnes of CO2 a year.
Alkemists, which provides third-party analytical services to the dietary-supplements sector, will purchase enough renewable-energy credits made from wind sources to offset 100 per cent of its electricity and refrigerant-related CO2 emissions, equivalent to 11 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Alkemists also has committed to neutralising 100 per cent of the emissions created by natural-gas usage, employee commuting and corporate air travel through the purchase of forest-sequestration offsets. Trees will be planted in the Mendocino National Forest Hunter Fire Restoration Project.
"Going carbon neutral is a great way to move forward in a meaningful attempt to undo the harmful by-products of operating an analytical laboratory," said Elan Sudberg, Alkemists' lab manager.
