Opposing Trends in North America : Continued Success of EASY-SET(TM) Cultures Counter Softer Sales of Sweeteners and Flavors for Chr. Hansen

Chr. Hansen, a world leader in food ingredients, announced first quarter results on January 20, 2005, and the company continues in a positive trend. Revenue increased 4 percent in local currencies from last year. In North America, however, the result was not as clear-cut. Sales showed organic growth in both Canada and Mexico but fell in the United States.

On the upside was continued growth in the sales of cultures, particularly Chr. Hansen’s dairy culture system EASY-SET™, which targets the large US cheese dairies. EASY-SET™ has won large market shares in the US during the past years and the company expects this trend to continue. Less positive were lower than expected sales of sweeteners and flavors.

“With the performance for the first quarter below our expectations, we will focus on working closer with our customers to meet their needs by providing solutions and systems in a timely and efficient manner,” says David R. Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter was recently appointed President and CEO of Chr. Hansen in North America in January 2005.

Global result

Globally, Chr. Hansen’s revenue for the first quarter amounted to DKK 845 million (approximately USD 149 million), up from DKK 836 million the year before. The EBITA margin was 13.5 percent. For the full 2004/2005 financial year, Chr. Hansen retains the target of 5-6 percent organic growth. To read the full report, visit www.chr-hansen.com.
