VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A new human clinical study on the effects of OptiMSM(TM), the premium brand of MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) manufactured by Cardinal Nutrition, is scheduled to be published in the April 2002 issue of The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. The study reveals that OptiMSM, a sulfur-based compound, helps people with seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR)--common hay fever. This represents the first human clinical study of MSM ever to be accepted for publication by a peer-reviewed medical journal.
"We were pleased with the results of the study. This information becomes more credible once published," said Jeremy Appleton, ND, director of scientific affairs at Cardinal Nutrition. "We had extensive anecdotal evidence that OptiMSM was a valuable nutritional adjunct for people with seasonal allergies. It is gratifying to finally have a clinical trial that provides validation."
The study was a collaboration between the GENESIS Center for Integrative Medicine and the American Institute for Biosocial and Medical Research. Fifty subjects with a diagnosis of seasonal allergic rhinitis completed the open-label study. Each subject took 2,600 mg of OptiMSM per day for 30 days. Participants were evaluated using a Seasonal Allergy Symptom Questionnaire, completed once a week throughout the trial. Within the first week, significant improvement was observed in total allergy scores from the questionnaire compared to baseline. This improvement continued throughout the study.
"The nutritional value of MSM in supporting a wide range of biological functions is vastly under-recognized," stated Michael D. Levin, vice president of business development. "The first human clinical study on MSM ever accepted by a peer-reviewed medical journal studied SAR. That demonstrates our commitment to scientifically validate the use of MSM in areas other than joint health."
Cardinal Nutrition, headquartered in Vancouver, WA, is the most experienced manufacturer of MSM and operates the world’s only facility dedicated to production of licensed MSM.
