1/31/2005 - Latest Speculation in the Ingredient Wars
According to an article on Food Ingredients First, there is speculation that last week's Danisco takeover of Genencor was the latest salvo in a war for supremacy between Denmark-based Danisco A/S and Ireland-based Kerry Group. According to the article, rumors in Europe had been circulating that the two companies are on the short list of bidders for Chr. Hansen, with the Kerry Group possibly in the running for Degussa's ingredient business, which is also reportedly on the market, if a bid for Chr. Hansen were to fall short.

1/27/2005 - DSM to be Full Owner of Roche (Shanghai) Vitamins Limited
Netherlands-based Royal DSM N.V. has announced that it has reached agreement with Shanghai Pharmaceutical Group (SPG) to acquire the 36% equity interests of SPG it does not currently own in the joint venture between DSM and SPG, named Roche (Shanghai) Vitamins Limited. According to DSM, the company is to be renamed DSM Vitamins (Shanghai) Ltd.

1/24/2005 - Kerry Group Announces €20 Million Investment Programme in China
Ireland-based Kerry Group has announced specifics regarding the group's programme for the Chinese market, including a €20 million investment encompassing the acquisition of Hangzhou Lanli Food Industry Company Limited and the establishment of a new world class multi-processing manufacturing facility and technical centre on a 16 acre greenfield site in the HEDA Economic Zone. According to the company, the acquisition of Lanli will be completed by the end of March 2005 and the greenfield development programme will begin mid-year to be completed by the end of 2006.

1/21/2005 - Australia's Orica Acquires Keith Harris Flavours and Fragrances
Australia-based Orica has expanded its Chemnet specialty distribution business with the acquisition of Keith Harris Flavours and Fragrances from KH Foods for A$14.5m (US$11.1m) effective February 1.

1/10/2005 - Founder of American Casein Company and American Custom Drying Company Purchases Wisconsin Dairy Facility
Richard L. Shipley founder of American Casein Company and American Custom Drying Company, has purchased a 118,000-sq. ft. dairy facility situated on a 30-acre tract in Arpin, Wisconsin to increase production and to diversify into other protein markets such as wheat and soy.

1/4/2005 - Philippine Food Company Bids to Buy Australian Dairy Company
According to an article on Voice of America News, Phillipines-based food and beverage company San Miguel Corporation has initiated a bid to take over Australia dairy company, National Foods. The bid, at $1.3 billion for a majority stake, is 10% higher than that offered by New Zealand's Fonterra, which already owns 19% of National Foods.
