[4/29/2005] Martek European ARA Patent Upheld; Scope of Claims Narrowed
US-based Martek Biosciences Corporation (MATK) has announced that the Opposition Division of the European Patent Office has upheld the Company's European arachidonic acid (ARA) oil patent, but in a form containing modified claims which are narrower than the claims originally granted. According to the company, the modified claims deal with fungal ARA oil from Martek's strain in infant formulas free of EPA, and the company anticipates a competitor’s appeal of the ruling, and suggests it will itself appeal in an effort to broaden the scope of the claims.

US-based Unigen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. has announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a composition of matter and usage patent for the company’s antioxidant ingredients contained in its Aloewhite® and Pervarin® commercial raw material ingredient products. According to the company, the two products are derived from the aloe chromone molecules from Aloe vera and other plants, and have been shown to suppress free radical generation and the production of Reactive Oxygen Species.

According to the release, in humans 7- hydroxymatairesinol is converted into mammalian lignan, enterolactone, and low intake of lignan or low serum levels of enterolactone, in epdimeliogical studies, has correlated with increased risk of certain hormone dependent health conditions.
