Lacey, WA – January 19, 2005 – Unigen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leading research and development facility and supplier of proprietary, biologically active plant-derived ingredients to the natural products and pharmaceutical industries, has announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently issued the company a utility patent for using its proprietary policosanol ingredient to aid the body in maintaining healthy blood lipid levels.
This novel ingredient is derived from a wax from China, utilized for centuries by local communities as a nutrition source due to its high protein and amino acid profile. Unigen’s policosanol ingredient will be further developed into commercial products targeting health concerns associated with aiding the body in blood lipid management.
Recent guidelines published by the American Heart Association recommend that cholesterol-lowering drugs be used more aggressively in people at risk of cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, these drugs can result in liver damage or other side effects.
This natural policosanol ingredient was developed by Unigen’s Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Qi Jia and Natural Product Chemist Dr. Jifu Zhao. Dr. Jia indicated that in the past, a low harvest yield from natural sources, coupled with the high cost for isolation and purification, have limited policosanol usage. “We developed this novel policosanol product from a sustainable natural source to address various health concerns, such as those related to unhealthy cholesterol levels, in a way that is natural and effective. Unigen will continue to develop products that provide consumers with all-natural, alternative choices for improved health and wellness.”
