Vitamin D researchers win DSM award
Royal DSM NV, the global life sciences and materials sciences company headquartered in the Netherlands, has given the DSM Nutrition Award 2009 for research on human nutrition to professor Michael F Holick of Boston University, and professor Heike A Bischoff-Ferrari of the University of Zurich. The award is in recognition of their seminal contributions to research on vitamin D and its role in human nutrition and health. The award — which carries a cash prize of EUR 50,000 that the two winners will share — was presented at the International Congress of Nutrition 2009 in Bangkok in October.

New VP at Cognis
The Cognis Group has appointed Gregory E Pflum as vice president of its Nutrition & Health business unit in North America replacing David M Eckert, who is pursuing a career outside of Cognis and will be working closely with Pflum until year-end to guarantee a seamless transition. Pflum brings 20 years of Cognis experience from manufacturing operations through SBU positions, including his most recent position as chief administrative officer and vice president of supply chain operations.

Two new hires at Novel Ingredient
Gisela Roufs and Yolanda Nargiella have joined Novel Ingredient Services as West Coast account executive and director of quality control, respectively. Roufs has spent more than a decade working with raw-material suppliers, including American Ingredients and Pharmachem Laboratories. Nargiella comes from Johnson & Johnson, where she held a similar position in quality control.

Natural-colours chemist promoted
Natural-colours company DD Williamson has promoted Katie Price to the position of customer-support chemist. She has been a lab technician since 2008, performing quality testing on products including colour intensity, specific gravity, pH and viscosity. Price graduated from the University of Louisville with a bachelor's degree in chemistry.

Embria hires western US sales manager
Embria Health Sciences is continuing its sales-force expansion with the hire of Doug Reyes as regional sales manager. Reyes will be responsible for cultivating and managing customer relationships throughout the western region of the US. Reyes comes to Embria with more than 15 years of dietary supplement-ingredient sales experience, including senior sales positions with HELM and most recently, Kemin Health.

VP of scientific affairs
BioCell Technology has named Joosang Park, PhD, as vice president of scientific affairs. Park will be responsible for all R&D activities relating to the company's various patented and branded nutraceutical ingredients, including BioCell Collagen II and i-Sabi.

Interim CFO
Synutra International, a formula company based in Rockville, Maryland, appointed Joseph Chow as interim chief financial officer.
