Director at Kyowa Hakko USA dies
Kyowa Hakko USA regretfully announced the death of Yoichiro Sugimura, senior director of scientific affairs and business development for Kyowa Hakko USA. Sugimura joined Kyowa Hakko (Japan) in April 1991 and was in charge of international marketing until April 2006 when he was assigned to lead business development for Kyowa Hakko USA. Sugimura earned a master's degree from Kyoto University (Japan) and an MBA from Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. Sugimura was an accomplished athlete, winning several triathlon and cross-country skiing awards.

Business director hired to lead China division
Kemin has welcomed Michael Zheng as business director for the China food-technologies division of Kemin Industries. In his new role, Zheng provides leadership to the sales team as well as oversees other functional areas of the food-technologies business in China. Zheng has held key positions with several companies in the food industry, most recently at DSM where he served as business manager for soy peptides in the Asia Pacific. He holds a food science degree from Shihezi University and will complete his MBA from Fudan University in Shanghai in June.

Lab supervisor promoted to director
National Enzyme Co has promoted Ken Paydon to director of laboratory services. Paydon has worked for the company for the past 13 years; he began as a quality-control associate in 1997 and quickly became quality-control supervisor later that same year. He then went on to hold the title of laboratory manager for the last 10 years.

Veteran at Key named sales manager
Key Technology has appointed Teri Johnson to the new position of Intercontinental sales manager for the Australia/New Zealand, Asia Pacific and Latin American regions. Johnson has been with Key for 25 years. Most recently, she was the fresh-cut industry manager responsible for supporting Key's activities in this strategic industry around the world. She holds a bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering from Oregon State University and has completed the California Institute of Technology's program for technology marketing.

General manager hired at Frutarom
Frutarom Ltd, the seventh-largest company in flavours and speciality fine ingredients, has appointed Salvatore Gargano as general manager of its health-business unit. Gargano comes to Frutarom following six years as global director of the Actives division of the Care Chemicals Business Unit of Cognis Group (Laboratoires Serobiologiques brand) and as GM of division activities in Cognis Group's Spain subsidiary (Barcelona). Prior to that, he served 10 years as marketing director for Indena SpA (Milan).
