FrutaromVITAL STATS: Frutarom’s FenuLife deodorized fenugreek galactomannan ingredient

STUDY CLAIM: FenuLife can function as an alternative to other treatments in relieving acid reflux symptoms.

PUBLISHED: DiSilvestro RA, et al. Anti-heartburn effects of a fenugreek fiber product. Phytother Res. 2011 Jan;25(1):88-91. doi: 10.1002/ptr.3229.

ABSTRACT: Frequent heartburn occurs in many people, some who prefer alternative treatments to conventional drugs. In a pilot study, 45 subjects with frequent heartburn were enrolled. All subjects were randomly allocated to a FenuLife group (500mg per capsule, four capsules taken twice daily); placebo group (four starch capsules taken twice daily); or an OTC control group (ranitidine, 75 mg, twice daily).

After a two-week intake of FenuLife, taken 30 minutes before two meals per day, the FenuLife group showed diminished heartburn severity compared with baseline. This conclusion was based on symptom diary results and reduced the use of a mild antacid as a rescue medicine. Improvement for each of the two weeks was judged by comparison with results from a baseline week. The placebo group also showed statistically significant effects, but the FenuLife’s effects differed significantly from the placebo. Moreover, FenuLife’s effects were generally similar to the results of the OTC group. This study suggests that people with certain degrees of heartburn can benefit FenuLife.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS: FenuLife is suitable for capsules and powdered formulations.

Institut Rosell LallemandVITAL STATS: Institut Rosell-Lallemand Probio’Stick, a probiotic formula combining Lactobacillus Rosell-52 and Bifidobacterium Rosell-175.

STUDY CLAIM: Probio’Stick significantly alleviates psychological distress.

PUBLISHED: Messaoudi M, et al. Assessment of psychotropic-like properties of a probiotic formulation (Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175) in rats and human subjects. Br J Nutr. 2011 Mar;105(5):755-64.

ABSTRACT: In a previous clinical study, Probio’Stick decreased stress-induced gastrointestinal discomfort. Emerging evidence of a role for gut microbiota on central nervous system functions therefore suggests that oral intake of probiotics may have beneficial consequences on mood and psychological distress.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the anxiolytic-like activity of Probio’Stick in rats, and its possible effects on anxiety, depression, stress and coping strategies in healthy human volunteers. In the preclinical study, rats were administered Probio’Stick daily for two weeks and subsequently tested in the conditioned defensive burying test, a screening model for anti-anxiety agents. In the clinical trial, volunteers participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized parallel group study with Probio’Stick administered for 30 days and assessed with the Hopkins Symptom Checklist, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Coping Checklist and 24-hour urinary free cortisol test. Daily subchronic administration of Probio’Stick significantly reduced anxiety-like behavior in rats and alleviated psychological distress in volunteers. In conclusion, Probio’Stick displayed anxiolytic-like activity in rats and beneficial psychological effects in healthy human volunteers.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS: Probio’Stick is suitable for a wide range of supplements.
