Sabinsa Corporation Receives GRAS Status for Award Winning Branded Ingredient BioPerine

Sabinsa Corporation received Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status for its popular patented bioavailability enhancement ingredient BioPerine® - black pepper extract, after a comprehensive review of safety and toxicology data by an independent panel of scientists with international repute assembled by Soni & Associates, Inc.

Self-affirmed GRAS status allows manufacturers additional freedom to add BioPerine® in a variety of foods and beverages ranging from baked goods to milk products, breakfast cereals, cheese, egg products, processed vegetables, soft candy, soups, snack foods, non-alcoholic beverages, imitation dairy products, hard candy, chewing gum, granulated sugar, and even seasonings & flavors.

“We are pleased to have this additional validation of BioPerine’s safety,” said Shaheen Majeed, Sabinsa’s Marketing Director. “This branded piperine extract, popular in the dietary supplement industry as a clinically validated “bio absorption enhancer”, is now available to manufacturers of food products as well.”

The self affirmed GRAS monograph suggests maximum use levels of BioPerine® of up to 15ppm (15mg/kg) in specific foods, with the 90th percentile estimated intake of 13.32mg of BioPerine® per person per day, as the safe level for food use and intake.

BioPerine® enhances the body's natural thermogenic activity, which plays an integral role in utilizing the daily food and nutrients that the human body consumes. It has been studied for enhanced nutritional gut absorption in these following categories: herbal extracts, water-soluble vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins, antioxidants, amino acids and minerals.

BioPerine®, a 98% pure piperine extract, has been the subject of numerous scientific studies, many published in reputable journals. Its composition, manufacture and use are covered by several U.S. and foreign patents. Including US 5,536,506; US 5,744,161; US 5,972,382; 6,054,585; EP0810868; JP3953513; CA2247467. Last year the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (U.S. PTO) reaffirmed U.S. Patent No. 5,972,382, solidifying the strength of Sabinsa’s intellectual property on this product.

BioPerine® is an ingredient in Fast-C, the premium, faster absorbing and well-retained Vitamin C product that has been the subject of two clinical trials to date. FAST-C was chosen for the NBJ 2009 Scientific Achievement Award, and was one of three finalists for the 2010 NutrAward for the Best New Ingredient.
