PISCATAWAY, NJ - The U.S. National Institute of Health (NIH) has undertaken a trial called "Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease With Vitamin E and Selenium Trial (PREADVISE)," utilizing Sabinsa’s Selenium SeLECT‚.
This is a study evaluating the potential role of vitamin E and selenium in prevention of memory loss due to Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative disease of the brain which incidence increases with advancing age. Participants taking part in the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) SELECT trial, a study that looks at the use of vitamin E and selenium, in the form of L-Selenomethionine, for preventing cancer, have been recruited for this study.
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) affects over 4 million people in the United States. Scientists predict that approximately 14 million people will have AD by the year 2050 unless preventative methods are discovered. The odds of getting AD increase markedly after the age of 65, and there is no effective treatment for this condition at the present time.
According to the NIH provided study materials, "Studies show that increased oxidative stress may damage brain cells and is linked with AD. Many studies show increased oxidation of brain lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and DNA in AD. Although the causes of AD are not known, it is believed that oxidative stress is part of what damages brain cells in AD and probably other brain diseases. For example, one study of vitamin E in 341 patients with AD showed mild slowing of the progression of this disease. Animal and tissue culture studies of vitamin E and selenium show that they can protect brain cells from damage."
About 10,000 men will take part in this study. Each visit for PREADVISE study will involve a short 5- minute exam of participants memory, and questions about their medical history on an annual basis, with longer memory tests for 500 randomly selected participants.
