Seneca Farms 2011 Children's Nutrition Survey reveals Americans' breakfast habits

Seneca Foods Corporation unveils results of its Seneca Farms 2011 Children's Nutrition Survey, which finds that while the majority of U.S. adults say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, nearly half (45%) say the primary reason they don't eat breakfast is lack of time.

Seneca Foods Corporation unveils results of its Seneca Farms(R) 2011 Children's Nutrition Survey, which finds that while the majority of U.S. adults say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, nearly half (45%) say the primary reason they don't eat breakfast is lack of time. Also launching is Seneca Farms(R) Oatmeal & Fruit, a quick to prepare, portable and nutritious oatmeal that provides an excellent source of Vitamin C without trans fat or cholesterol.

"The majority of Americans know breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but clearly most of them, as well as their kids, are skipping it regularly," notes Elizabeth Somer, M.A., a registered dietitian and author of many books, including Nutrition for Women, Food & Mood, and Eat Your Way to Happiness. "Big mistake. People who eat breakfast have more energy, a more sustained good mood throughout the day, perform better at school and at work, score higher on tests, and sleep better at night. A good breakfast for both children and adults needs to include 1) a whole grain to provide high-quality carbs for the brain during the morning hours, 2) protein to keep you satiated and maintain even blood sugar levels throughout the morning, and 3) 1-2 colorful fruits and vegetables."

The survey of 4,349 adults ages 18 and older, including 486 mothers, was conducted online in February by Harris Interactive(R) and indicates that:

  •  67 percent of adults who ever regularly skip breakfast agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day
  •  Nearly 60 percent of U.S. moms admit their child skips breakfast
  •  More than half of U.S. moms wish their child ate a more nutritious breakfast
  •  48 percent of American women say they're either too tired or don't have enough time to eat breakfast

Seneca Farms(R) Introduces Oatmeal & Fruit

"A cup of Oatmeal & Fruit, along with a glass of low-fat milk and an additional serving of fruit is all it takes to prepare a healthy breakfast."

Survey Methodology

Harris Interactive(R) fielded the study on behalf of Seneca Farms(R) from February 11-17, 2011 via its QuickQuery(SM) online omnibus service, interviewing 4,349 U.S. adults aged 18 years and older, among whom 486 are moms of at least one child age 3-17. Data were weighted using propensity score weighting to be representative of the total U.S. adult population on the basis of region, age within gender, education, household income, race/ethnicity, and propensity to be online. No estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated; a full methodology is available. For complete methodology, please contact Sharon Villanueva Scott at 323.207.6189.
