Silk supports efforts to label GMO foods

During Non-GMO Month, the soymilk brand leader is participating in the Right to Know March, the Just Label It Campaign, and the Non-GMO Project.

Silk, makers of including Silk® Soymilk, Silk PureAlmond™ and Silk PureCoconut™, has become a sponsor of the Right to Know March, a 16-day walk from New York City to the White House to show support for the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods. The march kicked off on October 1, the first day of Non-GMO Month, and is traveling through five states and the District of Columbia en route to the White House. As a sponsor, Silk has pledged a cash contribution and also will donate aseptic single-serve Silk soymilk and almond milk for marchers. Silk certified its entire product portfolio as GMO-free earlier this year

Along with the Horizon Organic dairy brand, another WhiteWave Foods offering, Silk also is participating in the “Just Label It Campaign,” a consumer activation campaign designed to get at least 1 million consumers to contact the FDA to support mandatory labeling of GE foods.  The campaign, which also began in October, is the first initiative of Organic Voices, a collaboration of not-for-profit and for-profit organizations, businesses and trade associations that support organic food and farming.  Silk will use its consumer engagement channels, including social media, to encourage Silk fans to contact the FDA. Silk currently has nearly 100,000 Facebook fans.

In addition to support for these new initiatives, WhiteWave is an ongoing sponsor of the Non-GMO Project, a non-profit multi-stakeholder collaboration committed to preserving and building sources of non-GMO products, educating consumers and providing verified non-GMO choices. The entire Silk portfolio of plant-based beverages, including Silk Soymilk, Silk Pure Coconut and Silk Pure Almond, and its creamer line, have been verified by the Non-GMO Project’s product verification process.
